--BaCk In ThE sHu---NyEpI--TuEsDaY mArCh 16th 2010--

...Feels like lockdown...solitary confinement...can't go out of my cell...is it a flash-back?...is it a dream?...no no...NYEPI is on....I see a few neighbors sneaking around...no one is suppose to be out I thought.....also some lights on some of the neighbors houses, they are westerners....I figured they would hop the fence and cut their power...I covered my windows out of respect...the worst thing about it is the power went out about an hour ago......not sure if it is a "rolling black-out" or me not paying my electric bill on time(I went yesterday, but they were closed), hopefully the former, as it gets hot with no fan...and I was just starting season six of entourage...haven't seen the news since I've arrived here in Bali...probably will not either....it's the Balinese New Year, no one is allowed outside...no lights allowed...as the bad spirits fly over and do not think anyone inhabits the island and they move on...even the airport is closed... I saw some ogoh ogoh's(an ogoh ogoh is a paper machete monster) they signify something that has to do with the Nyepi celebration...I went last nite...near Big Jims...to see the ogoh ogoh's doing their thing, the "Sponge-Bob" ogoh ogoh was a crowd favorite, they range from 4' to 15' high...they are carried by 10-20 people depending on the size, they would make circles...around a giant stone statue while the Balinese played drums, gongs etc...my camera battery died, I didn't have my backpack with me with the batteries, flash, lenses etc...I had a nap as the jet lag was kicking my ass, got up, and hurried over to Big Jims to go see the ogoh ogoh's, I was out of it, didn't have the gear, and missed some great photo opportunities...that was yesterday...today's power outage is a rolling black-out, 3 hours, no power, a nice rainstorm blew through to keep the summer heat off....a day of rest...quiet...sleep...food...jet-lag...yeah and the jetlag....

Leggo My Ogoh-->MoNdAy 15th Of MaRcH 2010

...jet laggin, up before 3am....coffee, and catch-up on bloggin....I like to let people know there are several ways to skin a cat.....the American way...9-5...2 weeks off a year...paid if your lucky...401K...way....the "American Dream" actually this way is not looking so intelligent...and really never has...it took me awhile to work out what to do though...especially when "fantasy island" does exist...and is attainable to all....you just have to buy a ticket....and come....the internet prediction is for dropping swell today...so I'll bring the "white diamond" with me....and see how it goes...no surfing tomorrow, can't leave the house...not suppose to use the lights...tomorrow night...everything closed tomorrow...including the airport...Nyepi...so I was going to Seminyak to see the parade, the ogoh ogoh's, and all the rest of it, but I can't be bothered...probably head to Pecatu...my village...see my friends...and celebrate with them....good plan....see their ogoh ogoh's...Pecatu parade....

Baptism By Fire....Sunday 14th 2010

...time warp...deep sleep for an hour, up to pee....back down....for most of the night it went this way...a heavy rain storm, is always nice for background music.......up before the 415am alarm...the jet lag is on...have a bowl of oatmeal, a coffee and the scramble to put the surf-rack mount back on my bike(that was removed for some unknown reason as I parked my motor-bike on my porch for my trip to LA...anyhow...getting the surf stuff together after a period of time away from the  daily routine, means concentration to the details, as if the leash is forgotten, it sure complicates matters, need my rashgard(where did I leave that and the bordies) wax, water...board...ipod...helmet...I was walking around in circles getting it all together...the 20 minute ride in the dark...the crescent moon rising as the day was breaking...hillbilly music...playing...I had to yell out loud, to express the feeling of being home...Indonesia....on my way to Nusa Dua...i get there as it was just getting light...a few of the boys were there calling it 4'...oops only brought the 6'1" twin fin....this ought to be baptism by fire situation(I am under-gunned, haven't paddled since I was here 5 weeks ago)although I manage somehow...as I have been in situations similar to this...a lot over my 44 years on the planet...anyhow the water was warm, and the surf was on, long waits, and 10 wave sets....so lots of paddling....a bunch on the head...a few good waves....back to nature....plugged in....and lovin it....put the camera around my neck on my ride to town....to Sean's engagement party....in my neighborhood alone there were 3 ogoh ogoh's so I stopped and shot pictures of everyone that I saw on my way off the bukit...there is an electricity in the air....bali is alive, the Hindu's are dressed in white, the melasti ceremony of cleansing before Nyepi(the Hindu or Balinese New Year...I am not sure which...or both...is on the 16th).......

Back To Nature......Saturday March 13th 2010

...Bali at last and the plane's touching down......the stewardess is handing the hot towels around, from the terminal gate to Paul's limousine, it's a 20 minute ride to Balangan...to home...Paul shows up with "Sweet D" at the airport....now Diana and I have some history, we've never been in Bali at the same time, but we have been a lot of places together, from 1980-2010 so far, and hopefully many more experiences, and fun together....she says she'll be back here in June for our 10th annual NA Convention, and she is one of the only people I believe when they say they will be here...with D, Paulie, and me on our way to my home-group...the 5pm "Swell" meeting on Saturdays, I know we'll have a big turnout today......there were 7 of us total, a record turn-out in my experience for the bukit...since I've been going....
